No formal Arbor Day celebration in Bernville? No Problem!

To celebrate Arbor Day this year, the Bernville Shade Tree Commission suggests a TREE TREK on the sidewalks/streets around the borough for youngsters of all ages, 2-92!
Borough Residents—WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Please place one (or more!) cut-out trees, minimum 8” tall, in a window(s) or a storm door facing the front street where it will be visible to trekkers.  See basic samples attached.  (Cut-out trees may be green or any color.)
The Tree Trek will take place beginning on Monday, April 27th and ending on Saturday, May 2nd so please have your cut-out trees in your window(s)/door during this time.
Trekkers:
Take your trek anytime from 4/27 – 5/2.
Keep in mind social distancing guidelines as you try to spy all of the trees in the windows of borough residences.  See how many trees you can count!  Shade Tree Commission members ask that all trekkers respect vehicular traffic and walk safely. Have fun searching for trees, and enjoy the exercise and fresh air as you trek.  (Remember: Umbenhauer Park is closed.)
We offer the following additional activities as ways to celebrate Arbor Day this year:
-Search the internet for tree related information on any type of tree – learn about the shape of leaves and types of fruits trees produce.  Visit the Arbor Day website and search for tree related information.
– Create a drawing that has trees in the drawing—including both deciduous and coniferous trees for those old enough to determine the difference.  Another option is to color tree leaves and other tree related pictures – see attachments to download, print and color coloring-page-1 & coloring-page-2
– If going on a family hike to get exercise, consider walking through the Blue Marsh and observe the various trees–noting the different kinds of barks, where do they grow, and even branching patterns. (Remember, Umbenhauer Park is currently closed so avoid walking in it.)
– Walk around town and look for the tallest trees and the ones with the biggest diameters.

Bernville Borough is recognized for its 28th year as a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation.   This is in no small part due to dedicated efforts of Tom Vanzin, the Shade Tree Commission and countless numbers of volunteers who give up their time to help Bernville be a great community to live and play in.  More information about Arbor Day can be found at www.arborday.org

Bernville Borough Arbor Day

Bernville Borough Arbor Day – Saturday, May 4th at Umbenhauer Park, rain or shine. We invite you to join us for the park clean-up, or ceremony, or both! Clean-up starts at 9 a.m. and includes mulching trees, light tree pruning, leaf raking, and general park “sprucing-up.” Our Arbor Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will include the planting of this year’s Arbor Day tree.

Sponsored by the Bernville Borough Shade Tree Commission

Springtime is just around the corner

The following tree-related springtime events are coordinated by the Bernville Borough Shade Tree Commission.  Residents, scouts, students, friends of the borough, and any interested party are welcomed to participate in any activity.  Please bring along a set of work gloves if participating and wear appropriate shoes.  Individuals who volunteer may stay for however long they choose; everyone’s efforts will be sincerely appreciated.

March 23 – Stan Clay Park Spring Clean-Up – work starts at 9 a.m. and includes light tree pruning, tree mulching, leaf raking, and general park clean-up. For those who may be new, a training session on light tree pruning and tree mulching will be offered at 9 a.m. and will last approximately 30 minutes.

April 6 – Tree Planting at Umbenhauer Park – we will plant about 90 trees/shrubs of all sizes on April 6th at Umbenhauer Park (at least get the replanting effort started); the work will begin at 9 a.m.  This will focus on digging holes and mulching trees that we plant.  Some trees likely can be planted in 10 minutes, but others of a larger scale may take a bit of an effort.  Thus, this activity involves a bit more physical effort, so for those of you seeking a challenge of a physical nature, please consider joining us.  Please bring a shovel (or two) if you have it.

May 4 – Arbor Day at Umbenhauer Park.  This day recognizes the importance of trees in our community and the environment.  Our normal Arbor Day routine starts at 9 a.m. and we work for two hours (rake leaves, mulch trees, pick up small branches, clean picnic tables, light tree pruning, general park clean-up, etc.).  After the work session, a formal Arbor Day tree planting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m.

All volunteers are welcomed to participate in any of these events and the borough thanks you in advance for your participation.  If you have any questions, please contact borough hall.

Thank You – Bernville Borough Shade Tree Commission
